Attention Walmart Shoppers
Dear Drivers at Walmart
Before you pull into the Walmart parking lot, please stop and think.
This is a family-friendly store with the "low price" promise, which means cash-strapped mothers of young children are going to be shopping there.
It is a parking lot. This means you should drive slowly and look for people.
Yes, getting a good spot is a great idea, but it does not mean that you have to drive like you are in the Indianapolis 500.
When a minivan has its doors open, chances are there are little people climbing out. Please, notice minivans with doors open. These vehicles were designed for parents who are carting around small people. If the doors are open, pull around the van slowly, with your eyes open for small people. No one is going to pull into the parking space while you are trying to do so.
If you inadvertently almost run over a small child, scaring the living daylights out of her mom who was on the other side unstrapping the other small child in the family, "sorry about that, she's just so little I didn't see her," is probably going to fall flat with the mom.
Although, I'm not really sure what you should say, so perhaps that was a good try, but let's put a little more feeling into it. Had you swung around a second later, you might have seriously hurt or killed said small child.
People, it's a parking lot, with minivans, and small people. Please, drive cautiously.
There is no gold medal for being the first one to that parking space.
Signed,
Mom Whose Heart Has Just Stopped Racing
*(Yes, this did happen to me today. I am thanking the Lord for keeping His hand of protection on my little girl. I am not exaggerating when I say that the car almost hit her.)

June 1, 2011, 1:32 pmKelly Morga says:Very scary!! I am very happy that your little girl is okay. I get very nervous when taking advantage of the empty spot next to me to have the room to stap my son in the stroller. However, I am always cautious of people pulling into the spot and I try to be as quick as possible. You are right, though, people do not think about little people running inbetween cars and away from parents. It is an issue that should be brought to everyone's attention. Maybe petition to have signs placed around the parking lot alerting drivers to slow down and be cautious of pedistrians.Log in to reply -
June 1, 2011, 1:38 pmDfallis says:There should be a sign in there parking lot, warning customers that some numbskulls think they have entered Road Race 2000...I'm going to get killed trying to get into the store. I had a lady stop two inches shy of my knee and then acted like it was my fault and she apparently had no idea what the yellow stripes were for, either. I would be scared to death to take my granddaughters with me, alone...Omg, people are nuts!Log in to reply -
June 1, 2011, 1:44 pmSusan Paduano says:Vote #3. At my in Tinton Falls, NJ, it's hit and run. Both in the parking lot and inside the store. I'm careful at both. But inside the store, angry customers have hit me, pushed me and ran. Many people I know got their cars hit in this lot. Some with them in it. All hit and runs. Of course they didn't get their plates while they were racing and zigzagging around the corner, not to be caught. No one cared if they were hurt. They were afraid to be caught. They wound up with over $2000.00 worth of damage on their vehicles which is sad too. People are son into this instant fast food gratification, that if you don't move, we are not waiting. Stop the cycle and save lives!Log in to reply -

June 1, 2011, 8:25 pmTammy Mommy says:Scarry, for sure, & yet, you wrote about it in such a cute way! (Can your little one open the door herself? Our minivan has child safety locks, for which I'm grateful. C can't get himself out of his carseat, yet, but I'm almost obnoxiously cautious in parking lots. After I unstrap him, I close his door & make him wait inside & crawl to get out J's door, after I get him out of his seat) In case I thought I was being paranoid, I will no longer think that way!Log in to reply -
June 1, 2011, 8:30 pmNicole Harms says:No, she can't open the door. Well she can when it's not broken, but she's 5, so she's really good about being careful. She can unstrap now b/c she's in the seat belt booster. She usually unbuckles, stays close to the van and comes around to M's side while I'm unstrapping M. But that car was going so fast and pulling in so tightly that it was very dangerous. So, I will probably now make her stay in the car until I get M out. . .Log in to reply-
June 2, 2011, 10:07 ammohoelx says:I'd suggest having the 5 year old exit via the same door you are getting the little one out from - she can unbuckle herself, then wait to cross THROUGH the van to where you are. Just a thought....Log in to reply

June 1, 2011, 11:42 pmDayle Fraschilla says:Wow! Soooo happy to hear that nobody was hurt! I think you should mass print this and flier the cars in Walmart's parking lot with it!! --- Not in a parking lot, but there was an incedent a couple of years ago where my daughter was almost hit by a car. We were walking down the sidewalk. A car was parked in a driveway - no lights on and tinted windows so I couldn't see that someone was inside. Just as I'm behind the car with my then 4 year old, the car starts backing up quickly. I slammed my hand down on the back of the car and the driver stopped. It took every ounce of strength I had not start a fight right there. If not for setting a good example for my daughter being a higher priority, I may have ended up in jail that day!Log in to reply-
June 2, 2011, 4:43 amNicole Harms says:I am so paranoid about this in my own neighborhood b/c we have kids coming and going on bikes and scooters without really paying attention. I always double and triple check, but I know not everyone is so careful. Glad your girl was OK and that you were able to keep your cool. It didn't hit me until later about all of this b/c I was focused on getting the things we needed at the store, of I might have had words for that lady when she "apologized" to me too.Log in to reply

June 3, 2011, 3:06 pmJackie M says:Great post! I know exactly what you're talking about. I have been waiting to park in a spot while moms or dads are loading little ones into the stroller in an open stall and the car behind me will actually start honking at me! As if I have nothing better to do than sit in the lane, blocking off traffic for no apparent reason. I refuse to rush into a stall possibly hurting/killing someone because people are impatient in the parking lot. On another note, you just can't win at Walmart. Because of Indy 500 wannabes in the parking lot, screeching into open stalls on 2 tires (okay, maybe a little exaggeration...), I started parking away from most of the other cars. Even away from most cars, I have almost been hit while going to/from my car. Cars would come screeching around the corner (sometimes literally), to get to that oh so special parking spot, not expecting anyone to be around the corner, walking from so far away towards the store. Good thing I have pretty fast reflexes or I would have been hospitalized by now.Log in to reply -
June 3, 2011, 6:42 pmTeresa Thomas says:Nicole, I am so glad to hear, that your little one is safe and sound. I love shopping at Wall Mart and we have one that is close by and I know just what you mean. Even though, my sons are older, I would have said the same thing. We need to hang on to our little ones and to make sure, that no harm will come to them. Thank God above that he did have his hand of protection on her. You said, that you work from home, I would also, like to do that. If you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear from you. Here's my email address. hawksnests78@yahoo.com. Please, do get back to me and let me know. If you have a face book account, you can also, find me over there as well. June 3, 2011, 7:29 pmTeresa Thomas says:Carolyn, I had gotten this email address through a state park there in the state of West Virginia, which is where I'm originally, from. Do a Google maps and type in Hawksnests and you'll see the most beautiful state park there is. I have been there back in the summer of 1978. I have a twitter account, but, I'm not really on it all that much. I'm more on face book. However, if you would like to contact me, just use that email address that I gave you. I'm always checking it throughout the day. Look forward to hearing from you.Log in to reply -

June 21, 2011, 5:09 pmHope Wilbanks says:People get so CRAZY at Wal-Mart!! I get *really* irritated at ours because everybody acts like they don't know what a PEDESTRIAN CROSSING means. Obviously they don't, because if you don't look and someone's coming, you'll get run over. They won't stop. It's ridiculous. I really have to watch myself because I can get loud FAST about it. ;) (Voted! And adding you to my bloggers!)Log in to reply -
June 21, 2011, 5:31 pmTeresa Thomas says:Hope, I quite agree with you on your comment. I know just how it is with people that tries to run people over just because, they're in the cross walk. I have that problem all the time. Not just at Wall Mart either. I have that problem all over and just about everywhere I go they try to think, that they're going to be making a right turn on me until I look right into their eyes and then, they stop in a heart beat. They know, that when I'm looking in their eyes,, they know, that I mean business when it comes to saying that I dare you to make that right turn. They don't do it.........Log in to reply -
